The 12 Wheel of Life Areas Explained

A clear breakdown of the 12 Wheel of Life areas — what each one covers, the question to ask yourself, and the signs a score is quietly low.

The Wheel of Life splits your life into areas so you can rate each one honestly. There's no official list — eight to twelve is typical — but more areas give you a sharper picture. Litak uses twelve. Here's what each one covers, the question to ask yourself, and a sign the score is quietly low.

If you'd rather just see your shape, you can take the interactive Wheel of Life first and use this as a reference.

1. Health & energy

Your body, sleep, fitness and how you feel physically. Ask: how satisfied am I with my energy and self-care right now? Low sign: you're running on caffeine and willpower and recovery keeps getting postponed.

2. Career & work

Direction, challenge and meaning in what you do. Ask: how fulfilled am I by my work and where it's heading? Low sign: the days pass but none of them feel like they're building toward anything.

3. Finances

Security, control and your relationship with money. Ask: how confident do I feel about my financial situation and goals? Low sign: money is a source of low-grade anxiety you avoid looking at directly.

4. Family

The people you're connected to by blood or by choice. Ask: how connected and satisfied am I with these relationships? Low sign: contact has quietly thinned to logistics and obligation.

5. Friends & social

Connection, belonging and fun with others. Ask: how fulfilled are my friendships and social life? Low sign: you can't remember the last unhurried evening with a friend.

6. Personal growth

Learning, skills and becoming who you want to be. Ask: how actively am I growing right now? Low sign: months pass without learning anything that stretched you.

7. Fun & recreation

Play, hobbies and rest that isn't "productive". Ask: how much time goes to things that simply bring me joy? Low sign: rest only happens when you're too exhausted to do anything else.

8. Environment

Your home, your spaces and the order around you. Ask: how comfortable and inspiring is the space I live and work in? Low sign: your surroundings drain rather than support you.

9. Spirituality

Meaning, values and a sense of something larger. Ask: how connected do I feel to purpose and inner peace? Low sign: you're busy but can't say what any of it is for.

10. Creativity

Self-expression and exploring new ideas. Ask: how often do I create or explore something new? Low sign: every output is functional and nothing is just yours.

11. Contribution

The difference you make beyond yourself. Ask: do I feel I'm making a positive impact? Low sign: your energy goes entirely to your own to-do list.

12. Mindset

Your inner state, calm and resilience. Ask: how positive and resilient is my mental attitude? Low sign: small setbacks knock you sideways more than they used to.

What to do with the scores

Don't try to fix the lowest area in isolation — areas connect, and a low score is usually a symptom. Look instead for the widest gap between where an area is and where you want it, and start there. (For the full patterns this creates, see 5 Wheel of Life examples.)
